A short ride north of Fort Bragg brings you the tiny enclave of Cleone - which in Greek means gracious and beautiful. Cleone is the entrance to MacKerricher State Park, an oceanfront camping, hiking and horseback riding mecca for North Coast visitors.
Ward Avenue Beach is a wide, sandy expanse of rolling breakers and long vistas to the north and south.
Westport is located 13 miles north of Fort Bragg. This tiny town once had a population of 20,000 people when lumber was king and the Coast was home to fishermen and loggers. Today the population is a little more than 230. North Coasters and tourists flock here for the annual chicken barbecue and abalone feeds.
Highway 1 turns inland here and winds past the vanished town of Rockport, jumping-off spot for the famed Lost Coast, then connects with Highway 101 towards Eureka.
