The largest of the Valley towns has great restaurants, several shops that feature local artisans, and a world-class microbrewery. It is also home if the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show.
For more than a century, this town has harbored an apparent jabberwocky all its own - actually about 1,300 unique words and phrases comprising a lingo the locals call Boontling. Modern linguists regard boontling as one of the most extraordinary examples of homemade language in history. Indeed, Boonville boasts slightly more Boontling terms than actual residents. For local color stop further west, in Philo, at Lemon’s Market or Libby’s restaurant.
Navarro, which once boasted 14 mills and three brothels, is little more than a remnant of its former glory, but the western false-fronted buildings still stand next to the Navarro store.
